CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD FRIENDING MEME

Classic Hollywood is full of glamour, scandal, glory, and some of the most interesting and influential people of the past century. I'm labeling this post the place for fans of this gone era to come together & get to know one another.

If you don't know how this works, here are some simple instructions:
1. Fill out the little "survey" & post it as a comment to this post.
2. Skim through the other comments & get to know people!

And please spread the word about this!

Why Classic Hollywood? What's appealing about it to you? Because overall I think that everyone working in the industry was more talented. Not to say that there aren't interesting and talented people out there now, but they are the exception, not the rule. When i watch films or read about the stars of then they just sound so much more interesting. Many different looks, many different types of people, and within the system they would build an actors "star image" around their personality rather than making them like every other blase, bleach blonde idiot (and i meant that as a generalization, not a dig at blondes). And even for the people who I would not consider talented acting wise at the time, either they made up for it in personality that simply worked on screen or there was something else about them that made them fun to watch.

plus the style was to die for

And really older films just make me happy. There isn't a formula to it.
Other Fandoms: Friends, Gilmore Girls, Will and Grace, I Love Lucy, Desperate Housewives

You hit the nail on the head with the "why" answer.

I think that the studio system of that time had a lot to do with the charm of things. Because today, there are so many hoops to jump through with the media, agents & publicists, and irritating things like that.

Anyhow, we've got a bit in common - friends?

Why Classic Hollywood? What's appealing about it to you? I love Classic Hollywood because of the quality of the films made back then, when studios pretty much ensured that everyone had talent. There was also more sophistication, more glamour, it was more alluring and mysterious, more elegance that there's not much of in Hollywood today.

Other Fandoms: Hmmm, Franz Ferdinand, Star Wars, Harry Potter, LOTR, House M. D., Heroes,

Music You Listen To: a little bit of everything, from classical music to classic rock (gah, loooove The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, Bob Dylan, Santana - and a whole lot more), swing, jazz, crooners, New Wave, some hip hop (like early hip hop), funk, soul, r&b, alternative (Radiohead fan here!), love Coldplay, Franz Ferdinand, Travis, etc., music in other languages - pretty much anything

Dislikes: conceited, arrogant people, superficial, materialistic, close-minded, stupid by choice, whiny, bratty, gossipy, spoiled, immature, rude, obnoxious people, cell phones, very, very loud annoying music, lawn mower sounds, construction work sounds, taboid-fame people, airheaded teenagers, MTV as it is today, emo (ugh!), fake 'trendy' people, really bad music in general, lol

Dislikes: drama queens, racism, narrow-mindedness, cows when they stare, really huge photos where I'm not expecting them that cripple my internet.

Name / Age / Location: Emily/19/Chicago, IL when not at school, Kirksville, Mo for school
Favorite Actor(s) & Actress(es): Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Gene Kelly, Danny Kaye, Jimmy Stewart, Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire, Lucille Ball.
Favorite Film(s): Any of the Road movies, White Christmas, Singin' in the Rain, High Society, It's A Wonderful Life, Royal Wedding, too many to list.
Favorite Couple(s): Bing & Bob. They kind of sort of count, right? No? Damn.
Why Classic Hollywood? What's appealing about it to you? There's just this sort of intangible something-ness about it. Something I yearn to be a part of because anything that this time period can come up with pales in comparison to what once was. The era was very traditional, no distractions around everything, it was what it was, they didn't need bells and whistles. People knew how to act then, they were respectable and classy.
Other Fandoms: The Blues Brothers, old SNL, anything mafia related, Harry Potter, Broadway related stuff.
Music You Listen To: A whole LOT of Bing Crosby, but with some Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin thrown in for good measure, too. Not much else, honestly.
Likes: Theatre, history, good grammar, dancing, movies, reading, comedy, music, coffee, chocolate, sleeping.
Dislikes: Bad grammar, rude people, overly dramatic people, superficiality, spiders.
Your journal is... (friends-only, public, all about real life, all about fandom, etc): Friends only, but I add pretty much anyone who adds me. About half real life, half fandom.
Anything else?

Favorite Actor(s) & Actress(es): Gene Kelly, Humphrey Bogart, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, Dick Van Dyke, Julie Andrews, Judy Garland, Katherine Hepburn, Lauren Bacall, Madeline Kahn (even though she may not be considered "classic," I love her)
Favorite Film(s): Casablanca, Singin' in the Rain, The Wizard of Oz, all Hitchcock films, Mary Poppins, Ben Hur
Favorite Couple(s): Meh, not so big on specific couples in Hollywood (definitely not modern ones), but I do love Bogie and Bacall.
Why Classic Hollywood? What's appealing about it to you? I love all those old musicals, especially. Plus I like the fact that people seemed to have more class back then. Movies were simpler back then; the story was more important than special effects and explosions.
Other Fandoms: Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Lost, Futurama
Music You Listen To: Almost anything except rap, hip-hop, and most country; Doobie Brothers, Imogen Heap, movie soundtracks, Michael Buble, Josh Groban
Likes: Harry Potter, reading, writing, dance, theatre, music/singing, friends, family, late night conversations, the arts, children's litertaure, literature in general, laughing, Craig Ferguson, travel, photography (mine and other people's), icon-making/photoshopping, quality time, the beach
Dislikes: phonies, Paris Hilton, jerks, drama queens/kings, attention whores (even though I can be one sometimes), close-mindedness, blind faith (in anything; no offense intended), pushy people

Favorite Actor(s) & Actress(es): Alec Guinness. I'm also terribly fond of Leslie Howard, Bette Davis, Elsa Lanchester, Boris Karloff, Ingrid Bergman, Anthony Perkins, Vincent Price, and George Sanders. From a later era, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Peter O'Toole, Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, Peter Cook (lots of Peters, obviously), Patrick McGoohan, and Rita Tushingham.

Favorite Film(s): The Third Man, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, M, Of Human Bondage, Foreign Correspondent, Secret Agent, Old Dark House, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Spellbound, and all the Marx Brothers movies (particularly the ones with Zeppo). Later movies... Kind Hearts and Coronets. Bedazzled (the original, not that awful remake).

Favorite Couple(s): Irving Thalberg and Norma Shearer. Elsa Lanchester and Charles Laughton. Good business decisions, no?

Why Classic Hollywood? What's appealing about it to you? I think that moment in Sunset Boulevard really sums it up. "It's the pictures that got small." Though the industry these days seem pretty bloated and extravagent, they lack that essential quality that "classic Hollywood" possessed. They made 'em good, not just flashy.

Other Fandoms: Erm. Yes, I'm a fandom fringe-dweller. Dabble in all the basic internet fangirl ones: Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, but nothing obsessive. Quite a fan of Douglas Adams, though. Hammer Horror, if you can call that a fandom, as well as Ealing Studios. The Goons and British humour in the 60s (The Establishment, Beyond the Fringe, Monty Python, etc).

Music You Listen To: Echo and the Bunnymen (quite dedicated), Split Enz, The Kinks, The Who, The Zombies, the Beatles, Edith Piaf, Them, The Fall, Wall of Voodoo, Marlene Dietrich, Charles Trenet, Louis Prima, 60s garage and psych, 80s neo-psych (The Chameleons), and clever pop bands (The Monochrome Set!). I like pretty much all types of music (I'm all-inclusive), but I'll listen to these the most. MC HAMMER.

Likes: Shakespeare. Nutella. Bowling. Driving around town aimlessly. Youtube. Turner Classic Movies. The Pacific Ocean. Modern World History. Reading. Victoriana. Fuzz guitar. Bright neon lights. Babbling. Trains. Martinelli's.

Dislikes: Excessive punctuation in everyday circumstances. Being late. Library fees. Being disorientated. American Movie Classics. Halo. Sitting during a concert. Eating at the movies. Guessing games. Unnecessary sequels. Callousness. Bad lighting. Sunburns. Crowds. Music elitists.

Your journal is... (friends-only, public, all about real life, all about fandom, etc): Mostly public (after all, this IS the internet), a mix of life and whatever I'm into and forcing my friends to acknowledge.

Anything else? I really like black tea.

Anthony Perkins! I just watched Fear Strikes Out last night. Amazing movie. I think it really shows what a talented actor he was.

He was! Unfortunately, Psycho pretty much overshadowed everything he did later in his career. It was a fantastic movie, but it did end up stereotyping him.

Favorite Actor(s) & Actress(es): actress is without a doubt Katharine Hepburn; actor is a lot more flexible: Peter O'Toole, Humphrey Bogart, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Rudolph Valentino, Robert Montgomery, Leslie Howard
Favorite Film(s): the obvious classics: Lawrence of Arabia, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca; also An American in Paris, The Prisoner of Zenda, Adam's Rib, Wuthering Heights; newer movies include Beauty and the Beast, Phantom of the Opera
Favorite Couple(s): not a real life couple, but William Powell and Myrna Loy have the best onscreen chemistry
Why Classic Hollywood? What's appealing about it to you? Honestly, I just love movies in general. With classic movies, though, there is so much more to sort through and discover. Since it covers such a long stretch of time, there's a huge amount of variety. Classic movies give a fascinating look back at society throughout the last century. I also feel like classic stars were a lot more charismatic than celebrities today. Whereas for current movies I usually choose my favourites based on plot, script, etc., for classic movies my first criteria is always the acting.
Other Fandoms: Lost, House, Harry Potter, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lord of the Rings, Psych, Age of Sail (mostly Horatio Hornblower), Jeeves and Wooster
Music You Listen To: Rufus Wainwright, Duran Duran, Michael Buble, Adam Ant; a ton of soundtracks, especially An American in Paris, Lord of the Rings, Wuthering Heights, Beauty and the Beast
Likes: books, costumes/sewing, writing
Dislikes: cold weather, politics, airplanes

Favorite Film(s): Arsenic and Old Lace, An American in Paris, Top Hat, Shadow of a Doubt, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc., etc...
Favorite Couple(s): I don't really have a favorite couple, but I do like Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. They had good screen presence together.
Why Classic Hollywood? What's appealing about it to you? It's a rather lovely escape for me. I like different genres of basically everything, but classic Hollywood is particularly endearing. There was just something there that is missing from today's pictures, and that's not a bad thing; maybe it's class, or maybe it's just the fact that bygone days are just more interesting. Regardless, whatever is missing in recent movies is what makes classic Hollywood unique. I suppose one can just escape more effectively in an old movie.
Other Fandoms: Not really much of a fangirl, but I like musical theatre, House, Scrubs, and lots of other stuff.
Music You Listen To: Showtunes, jazz, rock...anything, really. I loves me some music.
Likes: Studying early modern Europe (1500-1800), classic novels, carmel apple cider from EVIL Starbucks, being a nerd, talking to various people...
Dislikes: Basically anything that makes me dislike you. In detail: Bigotry, sexism, unreasonable religious fervor (and I'm talking severe), self-importance, just generally being a jerk for no apparent reason...
Your journal is... (friends-only, public, all about real life, all about fandom, etc): 99.5% Public, mostly about real life. I do insert a bit of ranting about something-or-other, but mostly I dork about classes. My icon journal is super_fungi.

Name / Age / Location: Ginger, TN
Favorite Actor(s) & Actress(es): Dean Martin, John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Jimmy Stewart, Robert Mitchum, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Peter Lawford, Gene Kelley, Rock Hudson, Red Skelton, Lucille Ball, Marilyn Monroe, Maureen O'Hara, Shirley MacLaine, Jane Russell, Janet Leigh, Lana Turner, Jean Arthur
Favorite Film(s): Too many to name, seriously. I love westerns (Rio Bravo, El Dorado, Bend of the River, The Sons of Katie Eldier, 5 Card Stud, Bandolero!, Red River, The Tall Men...any of them starring the Duke, Dino, Jimmy Stewart, or Robert Mitchum along with some others), Ocean's 11 (and ANYTHING with any combination of the Rat Pack or solo), Kiss Me Stupid, All In a Night's Work, The Road movies, High Society, Come Blow Your Horn, Who's Got the Action, Viva Las Vegas, Follow That Dream, The Tender Trap, Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Quiet Man (my favorite ever), Any Martin & Lewis movie (obviously I adore Dean Martin lol), His Kind of Woman, Homecoming, Bus Stop, Gangster pictures...I'll quit now or we'll be here all day lol.
Favorite Couple(s): Lucy and Ricky, without a doubt.
Why Classic Hollywood? What's appealing about it to you? I love the traditional gender roles and they way men were actually macho and ladies were girly, the glamour, the lightheartedness, the fact that people could actually act and actually had to be good-looking (or have character) to be in the movies, the way it was okay to be a "star" (they weren't hung up on being "artists"). It's hard to put into words, but I just love the feeling of Old Hollywood all together.
Other Fandoms: Absolutely, positively, period, the end NOTHING else. I'm strictly Old Hollywood from my dress to my ideals to my entertainment. It's hard to meet other people like this, so I'm looking forward to finding some :) .
Music You Listen To: Jazz, Swing, Big Band, Country (though modern country is getting too much like other modern music, so I don't really listen to it any more. I just hate to see it put down, so I always include it in my genres lol). I love Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Sammy Davis Jr., Elvis, Ricky Nelson, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole, Doris Day, Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Jane Russell
Likes: Men, being a girl, acting, singing, shopping, watching movies, attempting to change Hollywood/the World lol ;)
Dislikes: Anything modern. Sissy men. Butchy, unladylike girls. Rap, punk, rock, hippies (I despise the late sixties--I'm all for the "Matt Helm" sixties, but the Beatles and the like...*shudder*), lack of manners.
Your journal is... (friends-only, public, all about real life, all about fandom, etc): I don't know whether to say fandom or real life. I'm pretty private, and I mostly talk about movies and the like, but on a personal level, along with my day-to-day.

Gasp. You don't like The Beatles? Wow. I don't see that very often.

Anyway, aside from the dislike of Paul & Company, you seem really cool. We've got several similar interests & rock on for the belief that new country just isn't country anymore.

Forgive me while I give a little squeal that you've got a Ronnie Reagan button in your info. I absolutely adore the man.

Why Classic Hollywood? What's appealing about it to you? there is just something about the movies that were made then that have this innocence or feel to them that is lacking in todays movies. Some movies done today are good, but with classic hollywood...im not sure how to describe it, but it's very appealing. considering the technology differece as well, i think the films were extremely well done. now a days, it sometimes feels like because we have CGI and stuff like that, it has to be used when it's not always neccesary.
